Carter is a type designer who now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is responsible for two of the most popular fonts, Verdana & Georgia. He first started with physical metal type and then to digital type.

One of his first works is the logo he designed for the magazine Private Eye.
Magazine cover dominated by large colour photograph overlaid with cartoon-style speech bubbles, captioned with tabloid-style headline, below a yellow and green masthead. There is no prose on the cover.

In 1981 Carter and his friend Mike Parker founded Bitstream Inc, which is currently one of the largest suppliers of type. Now with Carter & Cone he focuses mainly on readability of fonts on computer screens.
