Born May 30, 1947 in Stadthagen, Lower Saxony
Spiekermann studied Art History in Berlin, at Free University. He ran a letterpress printing press in the basement of his house to fund himself through college. During the 70's he did some freelance Graphic Design around London, then funded MetaDesign with Uli Mayer-Johanssen and Hans Ch. Krüger.
Spiekermann started FontShop (the first mail-order distributor for digital fonts) with his wife Joan in 1989. In 2006 the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena awarded him an Honorary Doctorship for his contribution to design.
